Seahawks Conclude Indoor Season At Virginia Tech

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's track and field team wraps up its indoor season this weekend by appearing in the Virginia Tech Challenge, a 15-team event on tap at Rector Fieldhouse in Blacksburg, Va.
 
"We're looking forward to heading up to Virginia Tech," said Layne Schwier, UNCW's first-year head coach. "The competition will be strong since many of the Division I schools are prepping for their conference championships next weekend.
 
"We're at a different stage in our performance readiness since many schools are peaking for their indoor conference meets and we are not. However, we'll freshen up some for this weekend since it's always nice to end on a strong note carrying into the outdoor season."
 
The meet begins with events at 5 p.m. on Friday. Action continues on Saturday at 11 a.m.
 
Junior Sarah Hamon just missed the school record two weeks ago in the 3,000 Meters and will be shooting for the record again. Junior Alexis Dickerson will throw the shot and Ari Whiteside will move back down to the 60 Meters and 200 Meters on Friday before anchoring the 4x400 Relay leg on Saturday.
 
Sprinters Ramira Mayse and Isis Welch will battle in the 60 Meter Hurdles on Friday. Versatile sophomore Courtney Cefalo will compete in the 60 Meters, 200 Meters and Long Jump – all on the same day.
 
In addition to the Seahawks and Hokies, other teams slated to compete include Duke, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, VMI, East Carolina, Radford, Elon, High Point, James Madison, Winthrop, Lynchburg and Roanoke.
