Beach Volleyball Picks Up Win Over Jacksonville


JACKSONVILLE, Florida – Bella Borgiotti and Katie McCullough rallied for a 15-11 win in the third set to give UNCW a 3-2 win over Jacksonville on Tuesday as the Seahawks closed out their swing through the Sunshine State on a high note.

"Today was a really fantastic finish to our opening week of beach volleyball play," said UNCW assistant coach David Fischer. "In the morning dual, we got a little intimidated by the athleticism of North Florida, and we took some lopsided losses in the opening sets. Then we realized that we're athletic too, and we settled down."

UNCW fell behind early, losing the fifth position, but the team of Halle Hunt and Sarah Kelly in the fourth position evened the match at 1-all. Nicole Lott and Kristen Powell won the second position to give UNCW a 2-1 lead. JU, however, answered with a win in the third position to draw even again.

JU forced the match to come down to the top position with a win in third position as Olga Nushtayeve and Katie Krawczyk edged UNCW's Ashleigh Crutcher and Maddy Kline, 21-18 and 21-19.

Borgiotti and McCullough won the first set but dropped the second to go to a third set where they prevailed and gave UNCW the win.

Earlier in the day, the Seahawks fell to North Florida, 5-0, as the Ospreys clinched the win with a victory at the three position when the tandem of Lott and Powell fell to Kimberly Ferguson and Lauren Ford (21-16, 22-20). In the fourth position, Hunt and Kelly forced a third set against Ambre Desaulnay and Chaney Howard before losing 15-9.

"I thought our plays did a great job fighting the elements and communicating. We have a lot of work to do when we get back, but to finish this trip like we did gives us momentum."

The Seahawks return to action on March 19-20, when they compete in the CofC Sand Classic.
