Seahawks Clip Tritons, 3-2, At Stetson Tournament

DELAND, Florida – Kristen Powell and Nicole Lott cruised to a win in the second position to clinch a 3-2 win over Eckerd in the finale dual match of the Stetson Spring Break Invitational on Sunday for UNCW.

The Seahawks finished the tournament with a 2-3 mark after falling to 10th-ranked Stetson (5-0) and College of Charleston (4-1) earlier in the day.

"Overall, our players competed at a high level for a first-year program, but we want to play the game the way it was meant to be played," said UNCW assistant coach David Fischer. "We've got plenty to work on as we get ready for Jacksonville and North Florida this week and the rematches with some of the teams we saw today and yesterday."

In the final match, UNCW built a 2-0 lead after winning both the fifth and fourth positions before Eckerd was able to trim its deficit to 2-1 with a win in the third position. Powell and Lott put the match away by topping EC's Gabriella Reis and Mackenzie Redner, 21-15 & 21-10, for the win.

UNCW opened the day with a loss to host Stetson as the Hatters clinched the victory with a win in the third position when Kaylee Anderson and Emily Carroll edged Ashleigh Crutcher and Maddy Kline, 21-14 & 21-15.

The Seahawks lost a tough one to College of Charleston as three of the matches went to a third set. UNCW's lone win went to Halle Hunt and Sarah Kelly, who took the third and final set, 15-11.

"Sarah (Kelly) and Halle (Hunt) complement each other well, with Halle's jump serve and Sarah's block. They both sided out well against Charleston, and they kept aggressive when they had to. Most importantly, they cared more about calling for the ball than being self-conscious, and I really think that was the difference in their match."

The Seahawks visit Jacksonville, Fla., for a pair of matches on Mar. 8. UNCW will play North Florida at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. start against host Jacksonville.
