Beach Volleyball Splits Two Dual Matches In Opener

Box Scores: Vs. Missouri Baptist | Vs. #18 Tulane
DELAND, Florida – UNCW opened its 2016 season with a 4-1 win over Missouri Baptist, but dropped the second match of the day when 18th-ranked Tulane posted a 5-0 win on Saturday at the Stetson Spring Break Invitational.

In the opener against Missouri Baptist, UNCW raced out to a quick 2-0 lead behind wins from Sarah Kelly and Halle Hunt in the fourth dual and Bethany Gesell and Sydney Alvis in the fifth position. The tandem of Nicole Lott and Kristen Powell clinched the match with a 21-14, 21-15 win in the third position.

"Missouri Baptist is a great new competitor in women's beach volleyball," said UNCW assistant coach David Fischer. "They were especially strong up top. At the two-position, our Kristen (Powell) and Nicole (Lott) had to battle down the stretch to take control of both sets. Maddy (Kline) and Ashleigh (Cruther), who played at the three's for us, can both thump a ball, so they had to adjust to the strong double-down defense Missouri played against them. Bella (Borgiotti) and Katie (McCullough) faced an athletic and tall duo at the top-spot and came up just short."

The loss dropped Missouri Baptist to 0-4 on the season while the Seahawks carried a 1-0 mark into its dual with Tulane.

In that second dual, Tulane swept through the Seahawks for a 5-0 win. Hunt and Kelly highlighted the UNCW effort, falling by scores of 22-20 and 21-19.

"Against Tulane, we were super close to taking sets at the four-slot, with Sarah (Kelly) and Halle (Hunt) trading leads with some fine players I recognized from the USA HP program. Nicole and Kristen played their hearts out at the two-spot, but Tulane sided out like champs and really moved their serves around well."

The Seahawks play three dual matches on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. against 10th-ranked and host, Stetson.
