UNCW Drops Pair Of One-Point Decisions To CofC, UAB

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – UNCW returned to the sand on Saturday at the CofC Sand Classic and dropped a pair of 3-2 decisions to host Charleston and UAB at the Creekwood Tennis and Swim Club.

"We got wins in the third and fourth positions and a pair of wins at the second," said UNCW assistant coach David Fischer. "I'm proud of the fight Sydney (Alvis) and Courtney (Mullinax) show in the fifth position in both matches, playing tough against CofC and pushing UAB to three sets."

In the opener, UNCW dropped a 3-2 decision to host College of Charleston as Cofc took the match when Hills and Rhodes edged Maddy Kline and Ashleigh Crutcher (21-12, 21-23, 15-8) in the third position for the win. UNCW earned wins in the second position with Kristen Powell and Nicole Lott sweeping CofC's Mummey and Ehlers (21-17, 21-17) and Sarah Kelly and Halle Hunt knocking off Madison and Foley (23-21, 21-19).

In UNCW's second dual of the afternoon, Powell and Lott won 21-14, 21-13 over UAB's Amber Treace and Zahria Richard while Kline and Crutcher topped Michaela Reesor and Avery Hoven in three sets (10-21, 21-18, 15-8).

The team of Powell and Lott improved to 5-4 on the season with a pair of wins.

"Nicole (Lott) and Kristen (Powell) found their rhythm, which was nice to see with good aggressive serving, blocking, defense and side out game.

The Seahawks face a pair of nationally-ranked opponent on Sunday including top-ranked Pepperdine and eighth-ranked Georgia State.
