Baseball Preview: UNCW visits #16 NC State

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW hits the road for its first test away from Brooks Field on Wednesday when the Seahawks visit nationally-ranked NC State for a 3 p.m. start at Doak Field.

The Seahawks own a 6-0 mark in the early going after sweeping the Hughes Bros. Challenge last weekend with wins against South Dakota State, Eastern Kentucky and longtime rival, VCU. UNCW also ran its streak of scoring in double digits to six with the sweep and enters Wednesday with 73 runs to its credit.

The Wolfpack, meanwhile, rallied past UNCG, 8-4, with six runs in the bottom of the eighth on Tuesday at Doak Field. NCSY improved to 6-2 with the non-conference win and 4-1 at home. The Wolfpack is hitting .306 as a team and the pitching staff has compiled a 5.00 earned run average.

Sophomore infielder Brian Mims was named Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Week after hitting .700 and compiling a 1.300 slugging percentage. Mims collected three doubles and belted his first career home run during the weekend. Against South Dakota State, he doubled twice and homered while driving in a career-high six runs. He finished with the weekend with 10 RBI's after knocking in three against VCU.

The Seahawks return to Brooks Field this weekend when they host Penn State in a three-game series that begins on Saturday. First-pitch is set for 2 p.m.

Players to watch
NC State – Preston Palmeiro, son of former MLB All-Star Rafael, has gotten out of the gates quickly, hitting .343 with two doubles and a pair of home runs. On the mound, reliever Will Gilbert stands at 2-0 with 13 strikeouts in eight innings over three games.
