UNCW Opens Indoor Season At Bob Pollack Classic

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW opens its indoor season this weekend when the Seahawks compete Friday and Saturday at the Bob Pollack Classic, hosted by Clemson, at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex. 

The meet begins with the Heptathlon 60 meters at 9:30 a.m. Joining the Seahawks from the Division I ranks are South Carolina State, North Carolina A&T, The Citadel, Western Carolina, Coastal Carolina Georgia Southern and the College of Charleston.

Senior Hailey Blackburn enters her final season looking to make a bigger mark in the UNCW record book when she competes in the 60 meters. Blackburn owns a personal record of 7.52, set in 2013, ranking her second all-time and just .04 seconds behind former standout Meena Reid.

Blackburn will also compete in the 4x400 Relay with Kayli Nichols, Alyssa Omile and Gabriella Robinson.

Returning to competition is red-shirt senior Krista Mangum, who will run in the 60 meters as well as the 60-meter hurdles. Mangum is eighth all-time in the 60 meters (7.85) and is the school-record holder in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.60, set in 2011. Mangum missed both seasons in 2014 with an injury.

In the middle distances, Emily Mauro and Meredith Bozzi highlight UNCW's entries. Bozzi owns the school record in the 800 meters while Mauro is fourth all-time in the same event.

In the field events, sophomore Margaret Edwards, who won the Colonial Athletic Association's outdoor High Jump title as a freshman, will look to best her PR of 5-6 set at the Virginia Tech Challenge last February.

Junior Carolyn Edler ranks seventh on UNCW's indoor list in the Pole Vault with a mark of 11-3.75 feet and will compete along with Molly Love and Liz Wood.
Valerie Afam hopes to carry over a strong effort from the fall when she competes in the 60-meter hurdles and the Long Jump. Afam finished fourth in the event at the 2015 CAA Championships.

The Seahawks will return to action at the JDL Hilton Garden Inn Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., Jan. 30-31.
