Spring Season Finally Here For Men's Tennis Team

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The men's tennis team begins its quest for a third consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championship this weekend when the spring season gets under way with a pair of matches at the UNCW courts.

The Seahawks, 15-7 in dual matches one year ago, take on Appalachian State at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the opener. UNCW then entertains Gardner-Webb on Monday at Noon before heading west to California to compete in the ITA National Indoors in Los Angeles.

"We're excited to start our spring season and open up with two very good teams this weekend," said Mait DuBois, the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Coach-of-the-Year. "Our team has a lot of new energy with six freshmen and two new assistant coaches (Alex Wetherell and P.J. Langone).

"I've been very pleased with how quickly the team has come together and how close our group is. Having so much new talent coming in and returning four lineup players from last year is a very exciting combination. We have continued to improve every week, and I expect that will continue through the spring, making for some very exciting possibilities come April. "

Coach Mait DuBois and his team are ranked No. 50 in the ITA's preseason poll after winning their second straight CAA crown and securing their fifth NCAA berth in the last six years. Saturday's debut is the first of 21 matches and 10 home dates on the schedule this spring.

Seniors Zach Hublitz (McLean, Va.) and Sam Williams (Bristol, England) are set to anchor the Seahawks. The young squad also features two juniors and six freshmen. UNCW went 78-38 in singles and 32-19 in double one year ago.

UNCW's recruiting class is one of the nation's best - ranked No. 23 by TennisRecruiting.net - and helps to offset the loss of veterans Rafael Aita and Pedro Mol. Aita finished with a 14-5 singles record and earned CAA Player-of-the-Year accolades for the second straight year. Mol went 11-8 in singles and played in 53 singles matches and 56 doubles matches during his four-year career with the Seahawks.

Last spring, the Seahawks captured their fourth CAA title and posted two shutouts in the conference tournament before falling to No. 23 Penn State in the NCAA Regionals in Charlottesville, Va.

The Seahawks were ranked in all 17 weekly polls last spring and wound up No. 50 in the ITA poll, climbing as high as No. 44 on April 1, 2014.
