Women's Swimming and Diving

Swimmer Stephanie Forlenza

Stephanie Forlenza is a Brookeville, Maryland native and a junior at UNCW.  She ranks among UNCW's all-time top times in Swimming and Diving in 100 Backstroke (first) and 200 Backstroke (first).

Q:  When and how did you first learn to swim?

A:  My parents put me in swim lessons when I was little.  When I was seven I started swimming competitively on a summer league team back home in Maryland.

Q:  What is your favorite TV show, new or old?

A:   Boy Meets World, I have all the seasons.

Q:  If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be and why?

A:  I've never been to Italy, but I've always wanted to go.  A big part of my family is Italian so I love the food and the culture.  If I had to pick one place in Italy it would probably be Venice.

Q: Last year as a sophomore you were CAA Champion and meet record-setter in the 200 Backstroke.  After this accomplishment, what new goals have you set in order to challenge yourself?

A:  I'd like to achieve that same goal again but I'd also like to make NCAA in 200 and see if I can improve in the 100.  I'm also on a relay this year so it is great to be on team-aspect of swimming.

Q:  What is your favorite vacation you have been on?

A:  We went to a place in Michigan called the Homestead when I was probably in third grade.  Both of my mom and dad's side of the family was there and we stayed in five condos next to each other. It was really good to have everyone in the family around.

Q:  If you were an animal, what would you be and why? (Do not say a fish)

A:  I'd be a bird so I could fly...or maybe a dog. I really like golden retrievers.

Q:  What is your most memorable swimming experience?

A:  Definitely the conference championship last year because I won the 200 backstroke.  My family was there to support me along with my best friend and it was one of the best feelings ever. My high school coach called me afterwards to congratulate me so it really was just a great feeling.

Q:  What is your biggest fear?

A:  Being buried alive and definitely spiders.  I'm not claustrophobic, but just the thought of being buried alive is awful.

Q:  If you could bring one thing to a deserted island what would it be?

A:  I'd bring a book, whichever one I'm reading at the time.  I really like fantasy fiction books like Harry Potter.

Q:  Growing up, who was your biggest inspiration and why?

A:  My mom because she is the strongest person I know.

Q:  What is your dream career?

A:  I'd like to get my doctor of osteopathics (D.O) degree. I've looked into Chapel Hill to get this degree and I really like North Carolina so I'd like to stay here.  Ultimately, I'd like to go into the surgical field.
