Leeper Hits For Cycle As Seahawks Win, 17-7

NORFOLK, Va. - Bobby Leeper became the first Seahawk to hit for the cycle in a game as UNC Wilmington rolled to a 17-7 win in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action on Thursday at the Bud Methany Baseball Complex.

The Seahawks improved to 27-20 overall and 9-7 in the league. The Monarchs, meanwhile, dipped to 20-24 and 12-10 in the CAA.

UNCW moved into third in the CAA standings with a .560 winning percentage.

Leeper, a junior, doubled in the second, homered in the third, singled in the eighth and tripled in the ninth. He set career-highs with four runs scored and four driven in. Junior Mike Rooney, meanwhile, added a career-high five hits. Seven hitters in the Seahawk lineup had multi-hit games.

Junior Seth Frankoff improved to 3-5 with the win. Frankoff allowed four runs on 10 hits and a pair of walks. He struck out five and recorded nine ground ball outs, including a pair of ground ball double plays.

UNCW banged out a season-high 24 hits, which were also the second most in the program's history. The school record of 25 was set in 1982 against the Monarchs in Norfolk.

Reigning CAA Rookie-of-the-Week Brett Harris (6-4) lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs on 13 hits and taking the loss for the Monarchs.

Jake McAloose paced ODU with four hits while the top three hitters in the ODU lineup combined for 10 hits.

Sophomore Alex Hill gave UNCW a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when he extended his hitting streak to four games with a two-run double to right center scoring juniors Grayson Evans and Matt Holt, who both singled earlier.

Leeper doubled with one out in the second and came around to score one batter later on a RBI single by junior Ben Thielsen. Cody Stanley, a sophomore, made it 4-0 with a RBI single to right.

The Seahawks sent 10 men to the plate in the third to take a 9-0 lead. Leeper homered in the third to give UNCW a 7-0 lead in the third. It was his second homer of the season. With two out, Holt lined a double to left to score two more and give UNCW a 9-0 lead.

After being staked to a nine-run lead, Frankoff retired the first batter but then fell behind Carlos Hernandez and allowed a single to the catcher and a double to Max Most, who finished with three hits, in the bottom of the third. Gerard Hall (3-4, 3 RBI) stepped to the plate and got the Monarchs on the board with a sacrifice fly to left. Jake McAloose followed with bloop single to left scoring Most, but was thrown out at second trying to extend the hit to a double.

Leeper got one of those runs back with a sacrifice fly that scored Rooney, who singled to lead off the inning, for a 10-2 advantage in the fourth.

Rooney added to UNCW's lead with a double to left off reliever Matt Walls to bring in Holt, who reached on a one-out error and moved to into scoring position on a walk to Robbie Monday.

The Monarchs continued to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Hall singled to left and McAloose followed with a bad hop single to short and Hall moved around to third. Harris plated Hall with a ground out to third.

In ODU's half of the seventh, Hernandez started a two-out rally with a single to right and came around on Hall's single to right to narrow UNCW's lead to 11-4. McAloose kept the rally going with a walk off reliever Bryan Booth, who made his lead leading 32nd appearance, to load the bases for Josh Wright. Booth closed out the threat getting Wright to pop out to left.

Evans' 19th double of the season scored two in the eighth to give UNCW a 13-4 lead. Monday made it a 10-run bulge, 14-4, when Monday hit a ringing double into the right field corner to score Evans. Rooney capped the five-run stanza with a two-out, two-run single.

In the ninth, Leeper tripled to left and scored UNCW's 17th run of the game on Evans' sacrifice fly to right.

ODU managed three runs in the bottom of the ninth off freshman reliever Jack Lane. Most knocked in the first run with his second double of the game and Hall brought him in with a single up the middle. McAloose's fourth hit of the game brought in Hall with the third run of the inning.

The series continues on Friday with a 7 p.m. start.
