Williford Tabbed CAA Rookie of the Year

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Coastal Athletic Association's coaches recognized UNCW freshman Trey Williford as the Rookie of the Year as well as a first-team All-CAA and All-Rookie selection on Tuesday.

Williford becomes the second consecutive UNCW pitcher to earn Rookie of the Year honors. The freshman tied for the team lead with seven wins while posting a 3.34 earned run average. Over the course of 14 appearances, including seven starts, Williford struck out 81 hitters, a program record for freshmen. Opponents hit a meager .220 against him and managed just 15 extra-base hits.

Joining Williford on the first team was junior third baseman Trevor Lucas, who hit .332 and paced the team with 12 home runs, 42 runs scored, and 54 runs batted in, including 33 in conference play.

On the second team, Cooper Allen and Mason Hughes were recognized as pitcher and utility player, respectively. Allen posted a career-best 7-4 record and 3.00 ERA. His 85 strikeouts in 78 innings led the Seahawks, as did his opponents' batting average of .214. Allen was recognized as a nominee for the 

Hughes, meanwhile, saw time at first and second base as well as in the outfield while playing in 51 games. Hughes hit a career-high .331 with three home runs and 28 runs batted in, while scoring 40 runs.

Earning honorable mention honors were Kevin Jones and JP Pennella. Jones carries a .294 batting average into the postseason with five home runs and 35 runs batted in. Pennella leads the league with a .373 batting average with 17 stolen bases.
