Williford Grabs CAA Honors

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW freshman Trey Williford was honored for the second time this season as the Coastal Athletic Association's Rookie of the Week on Monday following another stellar effort on the mound.

Williford, who leads the league with a 2.43 earned run average, tied his career high with 11 strikeouts in UNCW's 18-2 win in the series opener at North Carolina A&T. The lefthander allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk.

His 11-strikeout performance was his second consecutive start with double-digit strikeouts and tied the program record for a freshman.

Williford, who also earned the accolade on Apr. 13, also moved to the top of the league's ERA list at 2.43 overall and a sparkling 1.72 in conference play.

Nationally, Williford leads all freshmen in strikeouts per nine innings at 11.78 and is fourth in WHIP at 1.17.

The Seahawks open a four-game homestand on May 11 with a 6 p.m. start against nationally-ranked North Carolina.
