Newton Delivers In A Pinch For UNCW

Box Score ELON, N.C. – John Newton's pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the ninth lifted UNCW to a 9-8 win over Elon in Coastal Athletic Association baseball action at Latham Park.

The Seahawks ran their record to 23-18 overall and 11-8 in the league. The win, coupled with a loss by Charleston, also gave them sole possession of second place in the South Division. The Phoenix, meanwhile, fell to 17-24 and 8-14 in the CAA.

In the ninth, Will Tyrell drew a walk to lead off the inning and moved into scoring position one batter later on a sac bunt by Kevin Jones. Newton stepped up and belted the first pitch he saw into right center to score Tyrell with the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the ninth, Clay Masonis walked the lead-off hitter, and a sac bunt advanced the tying run to second. Masonis then fanned the next two hitters to strand that runner on second base.

Mason Ruh was credited with the win in relief to improve to 4-0, and Masonis notched his fourth save.

JP Pennella had a game-high three hits for the second straight outing and his fourth on the season. Tyrell and Danny O'Brien both had two hits. Tyrell scored three runs and knocked in two, while O'Brien homered and knocked in three runs.

Vince Fattore homered twice for the Phoenix and finished with four RBIs. Kevin Denty added two hits, and Jackson Alford also homered.

Kehlker Hamilton (0-2) was tagged with the loss.

The series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. start.
