DuBois, Huens Headline CAA Awards Haul for UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW men's tennis head coach Mait DuBois was named Coastal Athletic Association Coach of the Year for the fifth straight season, and senior Harold Huens earned CAA Player of the Year honors for the second straight season to highlight the accolades for the Seahawks.

Four Seahawks were among the three All-CAA singles teams, including two on the first team, with Huens being the league's player of the year. The Seahawks also had a pair of doubles teams recognized as All-CAA, with one duo on the first team.

DuBois earned the CAA Coach of the Year award for a record-setting 11th time as UNCW won its fifth straight and 11th overall CAA championship with a 4-2 victory against Elon last month. The 65th-ranked Seahawks qualified for the NCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed in the Raleigh Regional. DuBois surpassed VCU's Paul Kostin for the most CAA Coach of the Year awards in league history.

The Seahawks also posted a perfect 7-0 record at home and a 5-0 combined record against CAA opponents in the regular season and postseason. Since 2019, UNCW has won 29 straight CAA matches in all forms of competition.

Huens repeated as the CAA Player of the Year and earned a spot on the first team in singles for the third time after an 11-3 record from the No. 1 position. Huens became the second player in program history to repeat as the player of the year, joining Rafael Aita (2013, 2014). Huens was also the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2022.

Huens edged Veljko Krstic of Elon for the honor. Huens was a key factor in the second half of the Seahawks' season, posting a 7-0 record in his final 10 matches. Huens and Krstic met in the CAA Championship, where Huens led 7-6 (1), 6-5 before the match went unfinished.

Huens finished his career with 50 singles wins, tied for the 14th most in program history. He walso named the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2022.

No. 104 Sam Nicholson, a senior who primarily played No. 2 singles, also earned first-team honors after going 12-6 on the season, including 9-1 in his last 10 matches.

Nicholson was the only UNCW player to earn a spot in the ITA's national rankings during the 2025 season. Nicholson was a member of the Big South Conference's first team for singles in 2023 and 2024 as a member of UNCA.

Senior Joseph Wayand was named to the second team for singles after leading the Seahawks with 14 wins at No. 3 singles during the spring.

Wayand was named Most Outstanding Player at the 2025 Coastal Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championship. Wayand defeated Oskar Antinheimo of Elon in a three-set thriller 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles spot, smashing a winner close to the net to clinch the title for the Seahawks.

Junior Lukas Steffen earned third-team honors in singles after an 11-5 record split between the No. 4 and No. 5 positions.

Wayand and Jordi Domenech were one of three total CAA doubles teams selected to the first team after an 8-1 record at No. 1 doubles. Wayand and Domenech earned a 6-1 victory in the championship match against Elon's duo of Krstic and Antinheimo.

The duo also went 1-0 against nationally ranked opposition, defeating No. 52 Joaquim Almeida and Siwanat Auytayakul of Liberty 6-3 on April 2. Wayand and Domenech also led No. 3 Luciano Tacchi and Luca Pow of Wake Forest 5-3, and No. 19 Nate Bonetto and Gianluca Carlini of Georgia Tech 5-2, before both matches went unfinished.

Huens and Steffen received third team All-CAA doubles honors following an 8-6 overall record. The pairing clinched the doubles point in the CAA Championship match against Elon with a 6-3 win. It was the second time Huens earned All-CAA doubles honors in his career.
