WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The UNCW men's tennis team earned a 4-3 win over No. 5 Drexel in the CAA semifinals on Saturday, advancing to the conference championship for the sixth consecutive season behind a clutch performance from freshman phenom Tomas Marin.
The Seahawks opened with a lone doubles victory as Jordi Domenech and Marin claimed a 6-3 win on court three. With the victory, the duo improved to 6-4 overall in doubles play.
Domenech gave UNCW its first singles point with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win on court three and improved to 7-3 on the season. Lukas Steffen followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on court one to move to 11-2 in singles, while Alex de Gabriele added a three-set win on court two, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, and improved to 8-3 in singles on court two.
With the match on the line, Marin delivered the deciding point on court five, rallying for a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) victory to send the Seahawks to the championship.
UNCW improved to 14-6 overall in singles play this season.
UNCW returns to the Mackesy Tennis Center on Sunday for the CAA Championship match against the winner of No. 2 Elon and No. 6 William & Mary.
