WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW women's tennis earned the No. 5 seed for the Coastal Athletic Association Championship, announced by the conference on Monday afternoon. The Seahawks look to capture their second championship in program history and the first since 2014.
UNCW (9-6, 6-2 CAA) enters the tournament on four-match win streak. Head Coach Hans Olsen led the Seahawks to six conference wins in the regular season, the most in a single season since at least 2006-07.
The Seahawks will look to avenge a heartbreaking 4-3 home loss in the regular season against No. 4 Charleston (15-9, 4-3 CAA) in the quarterfinals on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.
Doubles
Eda Arli and Elif Albayrak posted a 7-5 record from the No. 1 doubles position in the regular season. The duo also clinched the doubles point on March 29 against Charleston with a 6-1 victory against Sia Cariov and Francesca Salvato.
Stela Joksimovic and Alicia Eberwein earned the most doubles wins on the team, finishing with a 10-5 record in No. 2 doubles. The pairing is 8-2 in their last 10 matches with a four-match win streak. The duo was named CAA Doubles Team of the Week on March 11.
Lucia Gomez and Anna Parker Shumate finished the regular season with a 8-3 record in No. 3 singles. The duo enters the tournament on a six-match win streak. They defeated Jaiden McKee and Mckenzie Daniel of Charleston 6-1 earlier in the season.
Singles
Arli had an 8-5 overall record in No. 1 singles and went 5-2 in CAA matches. The junior has also won her last four since April 4. She was named CAA Player of the Week on March 25.
Joksimovic went 8-6 in No. 2 singles, posting a 5-2 record in conference matches. She is 8-1 in her last 10 and has won three straight. Against Charleston, Joksimovic earned a decisive victory against Salvato, 6-1, 6-4.
In No. 3 singles, Gomez is tied for the team lead in wins with 10. The sophomore is 7-2 in her last 10 matches and has won four straight.
Albayrak enters the tournament with six straight wins, the longest streak on the team. The junior went 10-5 in the regular season and had a 6-2 record in No. 4 singles. Albayrak also led the Seahawks with a 7-1 record in conference matches.
Alex Borcich went 10-3 on the season, winning eight matches in No. 5 singles. Borcich has won four straight and is 7-2 in her last 10.
Eberwein or Katelyn Hubbard will make the start in No. 6 singles.
