Jones Makes MLB Debut For Rockies

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – UNCW baseball alum Greg Jones became the 14th Seahawk to play at the major league level on Thursday when he took the field for the Colorado Rockies against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

Jones joins Landen Roupp of the San Francisco Giant as Seahawks who made their Major League Baseball debut this season. Roupp did so on Mar. 29, against San Diego.

Jones entered the game, a 3-2 win over the Cardinals, as a defensive replacement in right field in the bottom of the ninth.

Jones was a first-round draft selection of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2019 following two seasons at UNCW. In both seasons, he started at shortstop and helped the program to back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association tournament championships.

The former CAA Player of the Year in 2019, Jones began spring training with the Rays but was dealt to the Rockies in late March and opened the season at the Triple-A level in Albuquerque. Jones scored 19 runs and stole 15 bases before an injury forced him to the sidelines. He returned to action on June 1.
