UNCW Sets CAA Tournament Record In Taking Early Lead

SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – UNCW broke a tournament record by shooting 16-under-par in the first round of the Coastal Athletic Association championships on Sunday to take an early lead through 18 holes.

The Seahawks enter the second round with a two-stroke lead over Elon. Top-seeded College of Charleston is third, four strokes back. Campbell and Drexel round out the top five, in order.

Charleston's Kieron van Wyk is tied with UNCW's Gray Mitchum and Sander Akeren for first at six-under.

Patrick Sparks, the defending conference medalist, is fourth at five-under.

Mitchum set a career-best with his opening round 66. He opened the round with three straight birdies and added two more on the front nine. He closed out the afternoon with four more birdies on the back nine.

Akeren fashioned seven birdies in his round on his way to a season-best round of 66.

UNCW's 16-under bested its 15-under from a year ago in the second round at Dataw, which at the time matched James Madison's 2017 second round at Salisbury Country Club in Virginia.

The Second Round will begin Monday at 8:30 a.m. with the final group teeing off at 12:18 p.m.
