UNCW Advances In ITA Doubles Play

CARY, N.C. – UNCW saw a pair of doubles teams advance to the round of 32 while Joseph Wayand and Alex de Gabriele posted wins in singles play on Friday at the ITA Carolina Regional.

Wayand and de Gabriele teamed for a doubles win, knocking off Hugo Hidalgo Vega and Rodrigo Alves of North Carolina Central, 8-4. Joining them in crafting a double victory were Oscar Baumgartner and Juan Jose Vargas, who defeated Christopher Norlin/Rivers Cahill (Coastal Carolina), 8-3.

Wayand and de Gabriele also posted wins in the main draw. Wayand topped Coastal Carolina's Iannis Fernandes, 6-4 and 6-1. De Gabriele, meanwhile, bested Wake Forest's Joaquin Guilleme in straight sets, 6-3 and 7-5.

Tournament play resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m.
