Herbertson, Wald Pace Seahawks at Beach Blast

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW sophomore Summer Herbertson and freshman Griffin Wald won their first collegiate races as the Seahawk cross country teams finished in first in the women's 5K and second the men's 5K at the Beach Blast at Olsen Park on Friday night.

Herbertson topped the women's field with an 18:18.06 score as the Seahawk women secured a perfect 15 score. Wald led the men's field with a 15:23.74 time for UNCW, who finished behind N.C. Central by two points on the men's side.

"To come through with two individual victories with Summer and Griffin speaks to the youth and how we are an up-and-coming team," said UNCW Head Coach Jeff Klaves. "On any given day we can have a different No. 1. These past couple weeks, both have cemented themselves as our top runners. The team is all right behind them.

"We're really proud of this group and this community's help with this event."

Herbertson was one of seven Seahawks to finish in the top 10. The Sunderland, Md., native was joined by Kaylie Dziedzina (2nd – 19:15.97), Carly McCusker (3rd - 19:18.97), Isabella Borelli (4th – 19:20.06), Taylor Rand (5th – 19:20.81), Claire Carmichael (6th – 19:26.29) and Madeline Sullivan (10th – 20:29.60).

Freshman Josh Ashley (7th – 16:00.35) and sophomore Nash Mills (8th – 16:02.09) placed in the top ten on the men's side out of 42 runners in the men's 5K.

It marks the second straight week Herbertson and Wald topped the Seahawk women and men's teams.

The Seahawks are idle until they travel to race at the Chanticleer Challenge hosted by Coastal Carolina on Sept. 29, in Conway, S.C.
