Volleyball Preview: Hampton Inn and Suites Seahawk Classic

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Beginning Thursday, UNCW hots the Hampton Inn and Suites Seahawk Classic, welcoming Alabama State (0-7), East Carolina (4-2), and Norfolk State (0-2) to Wilmington.

All four schools will play three matches each, between Thursday and Saturday, with the Seahawks playing one each day.

"The tournament format is different, playing three matches over three days, but it should be fun with the teams that are coming.  We look forward to seeing everyone in Trask this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday," said UNCW Head Coach Dottie Hampton.

Instead of being in the gym at Hanover Hall, the usual home of UNCW volleyball, this weekend's matches will be played in Trask Coliseum as part of the Hampton Inn and Suites Seahawk Classic.

"We are excited to play in Trask this weekend. It is a different environment that will get us ready to play in bigger venues during the conference season. We love Hanover, but it is good to change perspectives every once in a while."

UNCW enters Thursday with a 2-4 record and has shown that one of their strengths is at the net, where the Seahawks rank fourth in the CAA in blocks per set (1.95). Two Seahawks, Grace Melnick and Caitlyn Callahan both rank top-10 in the CAA in blocks.

The Seahawks are coming off a 1-2 weekend at the Wildcat Classic, defeating Queens and falling short against Northern Illinois and Davidson. During the weekend, Belle Schall moved up to 12th on the all-time UNCW assists list. She has already tallied a team-high of 118 through the first six matches this season.

UNCW will get to face three teams this weekend that have all had different hurdles and results early in the season.

Alabama State, despite being winless in its first seven matches, has high expectations this year after being picked to finish second in the Southwestern Atlantic Conference (SWAC) and features six preseason All-Conference players.

East Carolina, meanwhile, lost to Appalachian State, but still won two of three in the Pirate Invitational last weekend, sweeping Campbell and Bethune Cookman.

Norfolk State has only played two matches, losing to both VCU and Old Dominion in straight sets twice.

UNCW opens the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic on Thursday at 5 p.m. against Alabama State. The Seahawks will then play East Carolina on Friday at 6 p.m. and Norfolk State on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Admission is free for Seahawk volleyball matches and fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to help UNCW in its second annual food drive to help the hungry in Wilmington.
