Men's Tennis Team Draws No. 11 Duke In Regionals

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team, fresh off its third consecutive Colonial Athletic Association title, will take on state rival Duke when the Seahawks compete in the Durham Regionals of the 2023 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship this weekend.

UNCW learned its opponent and destination during a special online show Monday night. Individual selections for the singles and doubles championships will be released on Tuesday, May 2.

The Seahawks, 17-7, will be joined by the Blue Devils (20-6), No. 22 Auburn (17-11) and No. 40 Cornell (17-6) in the regional at Duke's sprawling Amber Tennis Stadium. UNCW and Duke are slated to square off on Saturday, May 6, at 2 p.m.

The surging Seahawks have been on a tear down the stretch, winning 13 of their last 15 matches, including a dominating sweep of Hofstra, Drexel and Elon in the CAA Championship last weekend in Williamsburg, Va. Sophomore Harold Huens tops the club with a 14-4 singles record and seven-match winning streak. Junior Gabe Hurtado owns a 12-3 mark with a nine-match winning streak intact.
 
Duke fell to fifth-ranked Virginia in the championship match of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, but owns seven wins over top-25 opponents. The Blue Devils are led by five players with double-digit dual singles wins, including freshman Pedro Rodenas with a team-best 24-2 ledger.
 
UNCW will be competing in the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time and ninth as an automatic qualifier. The Seahawks are 1-9 in the NCAAs and upset South Carolina, 4-0, on May 10, 2013, in the Durham Regional.
 
Overall, the Seahawks have competed at seven different sites in regional play, participating in Athens, Ga., and Chapel Hill, N.C., twice each.
 
The men's team championship is scheduled for May 18-27, 2023, at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
