UNCW Closes Weekend With 4-1 Win Over Saint Leo

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – UNCW closed out its weekend by splitting a pair of duals, losing 5-0 to nationally-ranked FIU but rebounding with a 4-1 win over St. Leo on Saturday at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex.

The Seahawks moved their record to 11-12 following Saturday's results while FIU improved to 13-14 and St. Leo slipped to 15-11.

Against Saint Leo, Kaley McLaughlin and Maddy Folks put UNCW in front, 1-0, with a win at the fifth pairing. The Lions, however, drew even with a victory at the fourth pairing.

Ellie Bucci and Lyvia Trimp earned a straight-set victory at the third position for a 2-1 lead. UNCW clinched the dual one match later as Ashley Thompson and Bri Haggerty won 15-13 in the third set for the 3-1 lead.

Gabby LaPata and Sadie Sharkey closed out the win by winning 21-17, 21-14 at the top pairing.

Against 19th-ranked FIU, LaPata and Sharkey extended their match at the first pairing to three sets before falling, 15-13, in the third.

With her win at the second pairing against Saint Leo, Thompson moved into a tie with Maddy Kline and Katie McCullough with 50 career wins.

UNCW visits Macon, Ga., next weekend for its final in-season tournament. The Seahawks open the weekend on Friday with two duals against Mercer and North Alabama.
