Seahawks Begin Quest For Ninth Tennis Crown

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team shoots for a three-peat and the school's ninth conference title this week when the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championship is staged Thursday through Sunday (Apr. 27-30, 2023) in Williamsburg, Va.

The Seahawks, the No. 1 seed for the ninth time, will take on No. 9 Hofstra in a 9 a.m. match on Friday at W&M's McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. With inclement weather in the forecast, Friday's quarterfinals have been moved indoors

The UNCW-Hofstra pairing will be followed by #4 Drexel against #5 North Carolina A&T at Noon. Second-seeded William & Mary will face Monmouth at 3 p.m., and #3 Elon takes on #6 Delaware in the final match at 6 p.m.

Should the forecast improve, matches could be moved back outdoors to the Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts.

The Seahawks completed the regular season with a 14-7 record and cruised past rival Charleston, 4-1, in their last appearance on Sunday, Apr. 23, at the UNCW courts.

UNCW is 60-37 (.619) in singles play and 23-28 (.451) in doubles action this year. The team has won the doubles point in 10 of 21 matches this spring.

UNCW owns a 17-3 record as the top seed. Dating back to 2017, the Seahawks have won six consecutive matches and reeled off 14 of their last 15 matches in the conference tournament.

The Seahawks are making their 32nd appearance in the CAA Championships and have won eight of the last 13 tournaments. Overall, UNCW has fashioned a 38-26 record (594) in the event.

In last year's tournament, UNCW blanked No. 7 Hofstra in the quarterfinals, 7-0, trimmed No. 3 Delaware, 4-1, in the semifinals and defeated host Elon in the finals, 4-2.
