Softball Preview: Campbell

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team returns to action for the first time in 10 days with its final non-conference regular season matchup of 2023 at Campbell on Wednesday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

The Seahawks (18-22) and Camels (33-13) will play a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. The two programs, separated by less than two hours, have met 80 times since 1987 and are poised to continue the long-running rivalry when Campbell joins the Colonial Athletic Association ahead of the 2023-24 academic year.

UNCW, coming off its conference bye weekend, officially clinched a berth to the CAA Championships in early May. The Seahawks have been aided by four batters who have hit above .300 in the last 10 games, highlighted by graduate two-way star Janel Gamache's .375 average.

Gamache has also helped the UNCW pitching staff to a 1.99 ERA in the stretch with a 2.19 ERA and team low .193 opponent batting average. The Exeter, R.I., native has tossed 16.0 innings, second to only sophomore Kara Hammock's 20.1 frames.

Hammock paces the CAA with a 1.76 ERA and ranks seventh in the circuit with 76 strikeouts. The 6-2 right-hander's eight complete games equal the total from her freshman CAA Rookie of the Year campaign.

The Camels, in first place in the Big South with a 14-3 conference mark, have won four of their last five games following a three-game sweep of Radford at home last weekend. Campbell outscored the Highlanders 14-5.

The teams last met in 2021, a slim 2-1 Seahawks win in Wilmington. UNCW has claimed four of the last five meetings in the series and will visit Buies Creek, N.C. for the first time since 2016.

The Seahawks next host Drexel in their home finale from Apr. 29-30.
