Men's Golf Preview: at CAA Championships

SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – Led by junior Walker Isley, UNCW returns to the Colonial Athletic Association Championship this weekend at the Cotton Dike Course on Dataw Island, S.C. The championship begins on Apr. 23, at 8:30 a.m.

The Seahawks, who have claimed seven conference championship, enter the tournament ranked 78th nationally by Golfstat and looking to improve on their runner-up finish from a year ago at the same course. The College of Charleston claimed its second straight title last spring.

Isley placed third and earned All-CAA honors last spring as a sophomore and was the top-finishing Seahawk. This season Isley has continued to excel with five top-6 finishes, including his last two outings, the Seahawk Intercollegiate and the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial. His stroke average of 71.1 leads the Seahawks and ranks third on the program's single-season record list.

Patrick Sparks has been consistent all year and owns a 72.4 stroke average, tying him for ninth on the single-season list with Christofer Rahm (2019-20). Sparks has a pair of top-10 finishes, including a fifth-place showing at the Williams Cup in the fall.

Rounding out the lineup for the Seahawks are junior Sander Akeren and freshmen Gray Mitchum and Rune Bokeid.

Akeren has fashioned a 74.11 stroke average through nine tournaments this year and finished 23rd last spring at the CAA Championships.

Mitchum and Bokeid are making their championship debuts. Mitchum has three top-20 finishes to his credit, including a fifth-place showing at the Seahawk Intercollegiate. Bokeid's top finish was at the Williams Cup where he placed 16th.

The tournament field expands to 10 for the 2023 Championships with the additions of North Carolina A&T and Monmouth.

The Cotton Dike Course plays to a par of 72 and measures 6.998 yards, which is the second shortest course UNCW will play this season.
The tournament continues Monday with the second round teeing off at 8:30 a.m. and concludes on Tuesday with the final round beginning at 8 a.m.
