Seahawks Open Play In CAA Women's Tennis Tourney

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – No. 6 UNCW and No. 11 Hofstra collide in a first-round matchup to cap the opening day of competition in the 2023 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championships late Thursday in Williamsburg, Va.

The 12-team event runs April 20-23, 2023, at William & Mary's Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts. In first round action on Thursday, #8 Hampton takes on #9 North Carolina A&T at 9 a.m., #5 Stony Brook battles #12 Towson at noon, #7 Drexel goes up against #10 Monmouth at 3 p.m. and #6 UNCW finishes off the day with #11 Hofstra.

The winners advance to Friday's quarterfinals, with the four matches beginning at 9 a.m., with the semifinals set for Saturday at noon and 3 p.m.

Sunday's championship match will be staged at 2 p.m., with the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Women's Tennis Regionals on the line.

Defending champion William & Mary notched the top seed for the 19th time in the last 26 years. The Tribe has won 27 of the CAA's 37 women's tennis championships and finished as runner up on seven other occasions. W&M is 66-9 in the event since the league adopted the current format in 1995.

If victorious over the Pride, the Seahawks will face No. 3 Charleston in the quarterfinals on Friday, Apr. 21, in another 6 p.m. pairing.  UNCW is a perfect 9-0 lifetime in women's tennis vs. Hofstra, including 3-0 in CAA Tournament matches.

The Seahawks, 5-4 as the No. 6 seed in CAA tourneys, have fashioned a 7-7 record in CAA Tournament games in Williamsburg and captured their lone CAA crown in 2014 in Virginia's first capital city.

UNCW has reached the CAA Championship match three times (2013, 2014, 2017) and stands 17-24 (.415) lifetime at the CAA Tournament.
