Seahawks Split Slugfest Twinbill With Columbia

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW and Columbia combined for 51 runs on 62 hits, including 12 home runs as the two split a doubleheader on Saturday in non-conference baseball action at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks (5-6) halted a modest three-game skid with a 15-9 win in game two of the twinbill while Columbia earned a 15-12 win in the lid lifter and stands at 2-3 following the split.

Led by four hits apiece from Brock Wills and Tanner Thach, the Seahawks posted a 15-9 win in game two while Bryan Arendt and Dillon Lifrieri added three and two hits, respectively. Thach belted his third and fourth round trippers of the season and he knocked in five runs for the second time this season. Lifrieri, meanwhile, scored four runs and connected on his second home run of the season.

Reliever Case Stroup (1-1) was credited with his first win as a Seahawk.

Andy Blake and Anton Lazits collected three hits apiece for the Lions, who held a 4-0 lead entering the bottom of the first inning. Blake homered for the second time this season and added a double. Lazits doubled twice and scored twice.

James Vaughn (0-2) took the loss in relief for Columbia.

In the opener, Columbia scored six runs in both the fifth and eighth innings while hitting a season-high four home runs.

Will Parkinson (1-0) earned the win while Ethan Chenault (1-1) took the loss.

Trevor Marsh homered and drove in three runs while Jac Croom also added his first longball of the season. Croom also homered in game two. John Newton scored three runs in the opener and finished the day with four runs scored and three hits.

The Seahawks and Lions close out the series on Sunday with a noon start.

Notes: UNCW's 19 hits in the second game were a season-high and the most since 2018 when it had 22 in a 19-0 win against Quinnipiac … The Seahawks lead the series, 3-2, going into Sunday's finale … Wills, Lifrieri and Thach combined to go 10-for-21 with 10 runs scored and seven driven in.
