UNCW Strikes Late In 13-9 Win Over Columbia

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW scored 11 runs on six hits, including home runs from John Newton and Trevor Marsh in the bottom of the eighth as the Seahawks rallied past visiting Columbia, 13-9, on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks salvaged a tie of the series, 2-2, with the win and moved to 6-6 on the season. The Lions, meanwhile, dropped to 2-5 on the young season.

Jac Croom, who provided the eventual game-winning hit, finished with three hits, scored twice and drove in two. Newton and Marsh both homered and had two hits. Newton scored three runs while Marsh knocked in four, all coming on a grand slam home run in the eighth. Dillon Lifrieri added two hits and scored twice.

Reliever Ty Lawson (1-0) tossed a scoreless top of the eighth and was credited with the win. Lawson was part of the UNCW bullpen that limited Columbia to three runs on five hits over the final 4.2 innings.

Seth Dardar finished with three hits on the afternoon for the Lions and he knocked in three runs. Weston Eberly had two hits, including his first home run of the season, and drove in three.

Justin Tucker (0-1) failed to record an out in his relief outing and took the loss. Starter Joe Sheets allowed two runs over five innings of work, scattering six hits, walking one and striking out one.

The Seahawks visit Kannapolis, N.C., on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. non-conference battle with Charlotte.

How it happened: Trailing 7-2 in the bottom of the eighth, UNCW plated 11 runs as 14 batters made their way to the plate to give the Seahawks a 13-7 lead. Newton opened the inning's scoring with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left. UNCW loaded the bases and Brock Wills plated the third run with a sacrifice fly to center. Lifrieri loaded the bases again as he coaxed a walk and a wild pitch made it a one-run game. Tanner Thach followed the wild pitch with a single through the right side and the game was tied. A Columbia error loaded the bases again and Croom doubled into right field to score two and give UNCW its first lead of the game, 9-7. Newton was hit by a pitch to load the bases one batter later and Marsh cleared the bases with a homer on the first pitch he saw from reliever Thomas Santana.

Home Runs: Columbia: Eberly (1, solo off Taylor to left in the fourth, 378 feet, 105 mph exit velocity); UNCW: Lifrieri (3, solo off Sheets to left in the third, 365 feet, 97 exit velocity), Newton (1, two-run homer off Hubble in the eighth, 392 feet to left, 111 exit velocity), Marsh (4, off Santana to right in the eighth, 365 feet, 91 exit velocity)

Notes: Columbia won the first two games of the weekend series, but the Seahawks took the third and fourth contests … The series featured both teams combining for a .333 batting average, 88 runs, 17 home runs and 43 extra-base hits … Lifrieri had three of UNCW's 10 round trippers on the weekend … Jac Croom hit .474 (9-15) with two doubles, two homers, five runs scored and five knocked in … Marsh had eight RBIs in the series … Marsh now has four career home runs in March, two being grand slams (vs Ohio State, Mar. 17, 2022) .. UNCW leads the series 4-2.
