Early Offense Leads To Series-Clinching Win Over Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – UNCW plated nine runs in the opening two innings and rode the pitching of Zane Taylor for a 9-3 Colonial Athletic Association series-clinching win over Stony Brook on Sunday at Joe Nathan Field.

The Seahawks earned their third consecutive conference series win to improve to 7-2 in the league and 15-9 overall. The Seawolves fell to 8-13 and 2-4 in the CAA.

Taylor (3-1) held SBU in check over six innings, allowing three runs on six hits and a pair of walks. He struck out five. Ethan Chenault and Brett Banks combined to allow just three base runners over the final three innings.

John Newton had two hits, including his fourth home run of the season, and drove in a game-high three runs. Brock Wills, who extended his hitting streak to eight games, and Dillon Lifrieri both added two hits for the Seahawks, who had five extra-base hits in the first two innings. Tanner Thach and Jac Croom both had two RBI's.

Brandon Lashley (2-1) was roughed up for five runs in 1.2 innings and took the loss. SBU reliever Eddie Smink tossed six innings of shutout baseball in relief.

Derek Yalon and Matt Miceli had two hits apiece for the Seawolves.

How it happened: Wills opened the game with a walk and moved around to third one batter later on a Lifrieri double, his first of two on the afternoon. Thach followed with a two-bagger of his own to center field to give UNCW a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, Newton's three-run blast to left keyed a seven-run inning that saw 11 Seahawks make their way to the plate.

Home Runs: UNCW: John Newton (4, off Hobb, with two-on in the second inning)

Notes: The Seahawks now lead the series, 4-2 … UNCW is 6-2 on the road this season and won consecutive road series … Taylor has pitched six-plus innings in four starts this season … Seven doubles for UNCW were a season-high, and the most since 2019 against Delaware.
