Shafer Deals As UNCW Takes Series Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jacob Shafer tossed a complete game on 93 pitches as UNCW opened Colonial Athletic Association play with a 3-1 win over visiting Monmouth on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, winners of the last four, raised their record to 8-6 while the Hawks saw their modest three-game winning streak halted and slipped to 5-5.

Shafer (2-1), whose previous long was seven innings earlier this season, held Monmouth to three singles, walked one and struck out five.

Alec DeMartino had the lone RBI single of the night for either team, coming in the bottom of the third to give UNCW a 1-0 lead.

Alex Barker (1-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and he walked seven. Two of the walks came with the bases loaded in the third.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday's game has been canceled.

How it happened: In the UNCW third, DeMartino singled to left center to score Dillon Lifrieri for the first runs. Later in the inning, Trevor Marsh and Kevin Pitarra drew consecutive walks with the bases loaded to force in the second and third runs of the inning.

Notes: The last complete game by a Seahawk was Landon Roupp, who went the distance in a win over Elon at the 2021 CAA tournament … Shafer recorded 14 ground ball outs, eight in the air and had five strikeouts … Jac Croom extended his hitting streak to seven with a double in the seventh inning … John Newton and DeMartino pushed their hitting streak to a career-high five games.
