Diamond Hawks Take CAA Series From Monmouth

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday but gained a series win over visiting Monmouth at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks had their five-game winning streak halted with a 7-4 loss in the nightcap but saw their record move to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the CAA. The Hawks, meanwhile, evened their record at 6-6 but opened 1-2 in league play.

UNCW collected season-highs of 18 runs and 20 hits in the opener, an 18-5 romp.

Red-shirt junior Jac Croom had four hits in the opener, including his third home run of the season. Trevor Marsh and Tanner Thach had two hits apiece and knocked in four and three runs, respectively. Brock Wills chipped in three hits, including two triples, at the top of the order. Taber Mongero went 2-for-5 and collected three RBIs.

Junior Matt Gaither (2-1) earned the win with 7.1 innings of one-hit, shutout relief baseball.

The teams combined for nine home runs in the opener.

Eric Sabato led MU with two hits and he scored twice.

Monmouth salvaged the series in game two by scoring two runs in the seventh and five more in the eighth to erase a 3-0 deficit for a 7-4 win.
Brady Mutz had three hits, including a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth, and drove in three runs.

Jake Fraher (3-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen for MU and Stephen Aldrich earned his first save with two innings of shutout baseball.

Alec DeMartino paced UNCW with four hits in game two while Croom added three of his own.

UNCW starter Zane Taylor didn't figure in the decision after allowing two runs on five hits and pitching into the seventh inning.

Ethan Chenault (1-2) allowed four runs and was saddled with the loss.

UNCW returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 14) when it hosts nationally-ranked East Carolina at 6 p.m.
