Women's Basketball Preview: Delaware

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Graduate guard Carrie Gross stands 11 points away from 1,000 career points as the UNCW women's basketball team starts a two-game road weekend on Friday night at Delaware inside the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Colonial Athletic Association rival Seahawks (4-17, 1-9 CAA) and Blue Hens (12-9, 5-5 CAA) meet for the only time this season when they tip-off at 7 p.m. on FloHoops.

The Seahawks were within one possession of CAA frontrunner North Carolina A&T a minute into the fourth quarter last weekend at Trask Coliseum. The Aggies, however, erupted with a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to build a double-digit cushion and go on to win 66-56.

Gross will attempt to reach the milestone amidst the best scoring streak of her career, finishing with 20 or more points in three of her last four games. The Clinton, Md., product has averaged 22.0 ppg over the stretch, highlighted by a career-high 29-point effort vs. N.C. A&T.

Delaware holds a share of seventh place (along with Northeastern) after winning two of its last three contests. The Blue Hens were victorious 77-67 over Northeastern at home on Sunday.

The Blue Hens are led by a pair of double-digit scorers in Klarke Sconiers (12.4 ppg) and Jewel Smalls (10.3 ppg). Smalls ranks fourth among qualifiers in the CAA in three-point field goal percentage at 36.1 percent (61-of-169).

UNCW Interim Head Coach Tina Martin spent 21 decorated seasons at Delaware where she led the Blue Hens to 11 postseason berths, including four trips to the NCAA Tournament and seven WNIT berths.

The Seahawks continue their road swing at Towson on Sunday at 1 p.m.
