One of the all-time winningest coaches in Colonial Athletic Association history,
Tina Martin, continues as the interim head coach of the UNCW women's basketball team through the 2022-23 season
Martin, who recently completed her fifth season on the Seahawks' staff in 2021-22, was named interim coach on Feb. 13, 2022. The Williamsport, Pa., native joined the women's basketball program in May 2017 following 21 decorated seasons at Delaware where she led the Blue Hens to 11 postseason berths.
"We're excited to have Tina continue to work with our women's basketball team during the 2022-23 season," said
Jimmy Bass, UNCW's athletic director. "She has an outstanding pedigree in the recruitment and development of players and will draw on that extensive coaching experience to elevate the program. We're confident she will put the program on solid footing for the future."
The veteran Martin is the all-time winningest coach in Delaware men's and women's basketball history with a 408-238 career record. She ranks third in CAA history with 210 conference regular season and tournament victories.
A three-time conference Coach-of-the-Year selection, including a pair of CAA Coach-of-the-Year nods, Martin was instrumental in the development of Delaware's seven outstanding seniors in 2013, including Elena Delle Donne, a two-time WNBA MVP and Olympic Gold Medalist.
"I'm excited to continue leading UNCW through next season," said Martin. "One of the best decisions I've made in my life was coming to the Carolina Coast five years ago. This is one of the most resilient and special communities I've been a part of. There's hard work ahead, but I'm confident we can get our program going in the right direction."
Under Martin's stewardship, the Blue Hens won 20 or more games in 12 seasons, including a school-record of 32 victories during Delaware's NCAA Sweet 16 run in 2012-13. In total, Martin guided the Blue Hens to 11 postseason appearances, including four trips to the NCAA tournament and seven WNIT berths.
UNCW has benefitted since Martin arrived in Port City. Before her ascension to the interim position, Martin primarily worked with post players, including Carol-Anne Obusek, who was named to the All-CAA Second-Team in 2020-21 after leading the league with a .545 field goal percentage and 33 blocked shots.
The Seahawks went 18-12 during the 2018-19 season, including a 13-1 mark at Trask Coliseum. UNCW finished third in the CAA that season with an 11-7 league record and the program's most conference wins since the 2011-12 campaign.
With Martin on staff, UNCW won at least one game in three of four CAA Tournaments from 2018-21. As a bench boss, Martin ranks third all-time with 24 CAA Tournament wins.
Martin previously served as UNCW's interim head coach for the first two games of the 2020-21 season before manning the post the final eight games of 2021-22. Martin led the Seahawks to a 67-47 victory against Norfolk State in the season opener on Nov. 25, 2020.
Martin started her coaching career at her alma mater, Lock Haven, in 1986 and served as an assistant coach before continuing on to Seton Hall as a graduate assistant. She helped Seton Hall reach the NCAA Tournament in 1994 and 1995 while posting its first-ever national ranking before accepting the Delaware job in May 1996.
A two-time All-America selection during her playing days at Lock Haven, Martin earned All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference notice four times and was a two-time selection as the league's Player-of-the-Year. She finished her career as the conference's all-time leading scorer with 2,157 points and was inducted into the Lock Haven Athletics Hall of Fame in June 2016.
