Women's Basketball Preview: North Carolina A&T

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's basketball team returns home on Sunday to play new Colonial Athletic Association member North Carolina A&T at 2 p.m. at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks (4-16, 1-8 CAA) greet the Aggies (14-7, 8-2 CAA), who hold a share of first place in the conference alongside Drexel. The schools meet for the 25th time, but only the first time since 2013.

The conference tilt will be streamed on FloHoops with John Smist and Tom Lamont on the call. An audio broadcast can be heard on 95.9 The Breeze in Wilmington. Live stats will be found on UNCWStats.com.

UNCW will also celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Sunday with a free pregame clinic held in Hanover Hall prior to the game. Children in Grades 1-6 are invited to attend the event, which runs from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m.

The Seahawks were unable to stave off Charleston's comeback on Friday night, falling 71-63 in overtime in the Holy City. UNCW raced out to a 27-9 start in the first half, but the Cougars chipped away before sending the game beyond regulation with a free throw in the final seconds. From there, Charleston scored 13 of the extra period's 18 points to pick up the win.

Graduate guard Carrie Gross delivered 22 points, her fourth game with over 20 points this year. The Clinton, Md., native is the CAA's 10th-leading scorer at 14.0 ppg.

Sophomore guard Jayde Gamble added 10 markers, her fourth straight game scoring in double figures which is the longest stretch of her career to date.

N.C. A&T had its three-game win streak halted on Friday night at Elon. The Phoenix held off the Aggies' late rallies to earn the 63-56 win.

The Aggies bring in the league's highest-scoring offense at 70.1 ppg in their first year as a CAA member. The quick conference welcome is in part courtesy of graduate center Jazmin Harris who ranks seventh in the CAA with 14.4 ppg and second in the conference with 8.4 rpg.

The Seahawks next embark on a two-game road swing to Delaware and Towson next weekend.
