UNCW Celebrates National Girls and Women In Sports Day

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW Athletics continues to support National Girls and Women in Sports Day, a national celebration to inspire girls and women to participate in sports.
 
To celebrate the 37th anniversary of NGWSD, a free children's sports clinic will be held prior to the women's basketball game vs. North Carolina A&T on Sunday, Feb. 5.
 
The clinic will be held in Hanover Hall from 12:30 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. and is open to children in first grade through sixth grade. Clinic participants will receive special guidance from coaches and players from the school's women's programs, including women's basketball, beach and indoor volleyball, cross country, women's golf, women's soccer, softball, women's tennis and track and field.
 
To RSVP to the free clinic, parents or guardians should contact Fan Development Coordinator Mason Mullen at mullenm@uncw.edu.
 
Following the clinic, participants and families are invited to attend the women's basketball game at 2 p.m. when the Seahawks take on the Aggies at Trask Coliseum. Youth tickets for the game are just $3 using the code: "NGWSD" when purchasing at UNCWSports.com/BuyTickets.
 
NGWSD History
 
Wednesday marks the 37th anniversary of NGWSD, a day observed by all 50 states, with the purpose of  bringing national attention to girls and women in sports. 
 
Introduced in 1987, the first NGWSD honored Olympic volleyball player, Flo Hyman, whose advocacy and dedication paved the way for proper representation of women in sports.
 
NGWSD is powered by the Women's Sports Foundation, a nonprofit charity established in 1974 with an on-going mission to empower female athletes of all ages to reach their potential in sports and life.
 
Since its formation, NGWSD has recognized the achievements of all female athletes, the positive benefits of female inclusion in sports, and the progress of an on-going journey toward equal representation in sports since Title IX was enacted in 1972.
