Softball Preview: Home Weekend #2

Wilmington, North Carolina – A five-game home weekend awaits the UNCW softball team as it hosts Appalachian State, Eastern Kentucky and Georgetown in the second February tournament at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (2-7) will play the Colonels (7-3) on Friday at 7 p.m. before playing two games vs. the Mountaineers (3-3) and EKU on Saturday afternoon. The weekend wraps up on Sunday with another pair of contests between the Hoyas (2-5) and App State.

AROUND THE HORN

UNCW

The Seahawks dropped a pair of doubleheaders last weekend to Morehead State and UNC Greensboro in the Spiro Classic hosted by the Spartans.

Graduate two-way player Janel Gamache continued to lead the Seahawks at the plate and in the circle, hitting .455 (5-for-11) with a home run and four RBI while striking out five in 7.1 innings of work vs. the Eagles.

Reigning CAA Pitcher of the Year Emily Winstead made her season debut with starts on both Saturday and Sunday. The 5-8 right-hander struck out seven batters in six innings against MSU in her first of the season before issuing four walks and four runs in 1.1 innings on Sunday to the Spartans.

APPALACHIAN STATE

The Mountaineers split four games against three opponents (IUPUI, Seton Hall, Presbyterian) at the Blue Hose hosted the tournament last weekend.

Graduate catcher Kaley Coltrain (.364 average) is one of four App State players to bat .300 or better through the six games. The Roper, N.C. product has a team-high 1.177 on-base plus slugging percentage to go with six walks.

Pitchers Delani Buckner and Kaylie Northrop have combined for 14 strikeouts and no earned runs allowed in 20 innings.

EASTERN KENTUCKY

The Colonels took three of five games in Atlanta, Ga., last weekend at the Bob Heck Classic hosted by Georgia State. EKU bested Rhode Island twice and edged the Panthers once.

Redshirt junior Vianna Barron has seven extra-base hits, including three home runs, to go with 11 RBI. The utility player has totaled 27 bases through 10 games this season.

GEORGETOWN

The Hoyas picked up wins against Bucknell and Wagner before falling to Lehigh and Norfolk State on Saturday and Sunday.

Graduate student Brooke Plonka was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after striking out nine batters in 12.2 innings last weekend.

Up next: The Seahawks play their fourth straight weekend tournament to close out February at South Carolina. UNCW will play a game each between Illinois, Columbia, North Carolina A&T and the Gamecocks at Carolina Softball Stadium from Mar. 4-5.
