Three Seahawks Claim All-CAA Honors

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW's Pep Casas, Gabe Mercer and Jake Shannon have earned All-Coastal Athletic Association men's soccer postseason accolades following standout seasons for the Seahawks in 2023.

Casas was named to the CAA's All-Second Team as voted on by the league's 11 head coaches. Mercer and Shannon collected Third-Team status for the second straight year.

Casas has become a valuable mainstay in UNCW's midfield over the last two seasons. The senior recorded two goals and an assist in 16 appearances, including 15 starts, this year.

A native of Barcelona, Spain, Casas scored his first goal of the season and added an assist in the Seahawks' 4-0 home route over rival Campbell in late September then followed it up with a penalty kick score at Stony Brook one week later.

Mercer enjoyed a breakout campaign for UNCW with a career-high five goals to lead the Seahawks. The Wake Forest, N.C., native started 15 games and connected on two game-winners vs. East Tennessee State and UNC Greensboro.

The graduate student tallied four games with at least three shots, including five attempts vs. the Camels that featured a goal and assist for Mercer.

Shannon has cemented his status as one of the nation's most durable players, playing all but one minute over the previous two seasons, a 33-game span that includes 2,969 minutes.

The sophomore defender helped the Seahawks produce seven shutouts, which ranked second in the league and tied for 14th in the nation as a team. Shannon and the UNCW backline limited eight opponents to single-digit shot totals this season.

The Seahawks have now had multiple All-CAA selections for the 11th straight year.
