WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW men's soccer head coach Aidan Heaney and the Seahawks will host Harry's Game, an event dedicated to raising awareness and support for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, this Sunday, Mar. 22, vs. Wake Forest at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
Kick-off for the springtime staple will be at 4 p.m. with a children's soccer clinic at 2 p.m. The event will include free pizza, painting, and bounce houses for children. Concessions will be available for purchase.
Harry's Game is named after Heaney's son, Harry, who was born with Down syndrome. This event has grown into a special tradition within the Wilmington community. Over the years, this event has drawn increased participation, which has had a very meaningful impact on Harry and all those who attend.
"Harry Game started off really small. It started with no clinics involved, and I think again, just what we've done with having clinics every weekend with our players leading up to it, we've gotten to know and see these kids grow, said Heaney, "I'm really grateful for the support of our programs in Wilmington."
All proceeds raised will go to local children's organizations such as New Hanover Special Olympics and Coastal BUDS.
For Coach Heaney, Harry's Game represents far more than a soccer game. While the exhibition is an opportunity for players to develop skills on the pitch, helping them grow as compassionate and strong individuals has become a hallmark of the program through Harry's Game and other volunteer clinics.
"It's a highlight of the year. Springtime for us with Harry's Game is something we've been doing now for 13 years. It's really been exciting to see how it has grown over the years, and the support from the community and the connection we've made with our special needs community as well," said Heaney. "Having a son with Down syndrome, it's a labor of love for me, but I'm really proud of what we've been able to achieve over these last 13 years."
