Three Seahawks Earn NCAA Southeast Regional Berths

MECHANICSVILLE, Virginia – A trio of UNCW cross country runners - Nash Mills and Griffin Wald on the men's team along with Summer Herbertson on the women's team - punched their ticket to the NCAA Southeast Regional with strong finishes at 2023 Coastal Athletic Conference Association Championships on Friday morning at the Pole Green Park.

The Seahawk women placed ninth out of 13 teams in the 6k race, which was won for the fifth straight time by Elon. The UNCW men posted a seventh-place finish among 11 league squads in the 8k race that was topped by Stony Brook for the second straight year.

"We're super excited for our three regional qualifiers this year," said UNCW Head Coach Jeff Klaves. "Nash and Griffin are the first regional qualifiers on the men's side in my tenure and it continues to speak to the youth and ability of our rising men's program. On the women's side, Summer is our second straight NCAA qualifier and it just continues to show what's possible and when you put in the work in, great things can happen.

"These three regional qualifiers are a testament to our team cultures and everything we have been working towards."

Herbertson, who paced the Seahawks in all five races this fall, earned her first regional bid with a 22:41.80 time that was good for 40th among the 111 racers.

For the third time this season, Wald led the Seahawk men with a 36th place finish with a 26:36.40 time. Mills, a sophomore, was not far behind after posting a 26:40.50 time to come in at 38th overall.

Northeastern's Abigial Hassman repeated as the women's 6k individual champion while the Huskies' Benjamin Godish claimed individual medalist honors on the men's 8k side.

The NCAA Southeast Regionals are slated to be contested on Nov. 10 in Spartanburg, S.C.
