UNCW Alum Bonifay, Rangers Prepare For World Series

Josh Bonifay played for the Seahawks from 1997-1999

ARLINGTON, Texas – As the leaves turn colors and 28 teams have seen their season come to an end, UNCW alum Josh Bonifay and the Texas Rangers take the field on Friday for game one of the World Series against the up-start Arizona Diamondbacks.

Bonifay, who is in his second stint with the Rangers and his second season in his current position, isn't on the field, but his work and dedication are showing up on it as he serves as the Rangers Director of Player Development.

A native of Asheville, N.C., Bonifay played for UNCW from 1997-99 while splitting time between the infield and outfield. He finished his career with 21 home runs and started 111-of-113 games played for the Seahawks. He still ranks among UNCW's single-season leaders in several offensive categories.

Following the 1999 season, Bonifay was selected by Pittsburgh in the Major League Baseball draft. He would play six seasons with the Pittsburgh and Houston organizations.

Bonifay moved into the development side of the game, coaching and managing in the minor leagues until moving to the Rangers' Field Coordinator position in 2018.

Bonifay is looking to be the second Seahawk to win a World Series as UNCW Hall of Famer and current Cleveland Guardians pitching coach Carl Willis did so with the Minnesota Twins in 1991.

The World Series opens on Oct. 27 in Arlington.
