Tribe Trips Up Seahawks At Trask

Box Score WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Visiting William & Mary used a 6-0 mini-run at the three-mark to gain enough separation to knock off UNCW, 69-67, in a battle of longtime Colonial Athletic Association foes early Saturday at Trask Coliseum.

The Tribe, which overcame serious foul trouble, won its second straight to improve to 8-10 overall and 3-2 in the CAA. The Seahawks dropped their second in a row and stand 14-5 and 4-2.

Graduate guard Anders Nelson and freshman forward Charlie Williams scored 15 points apiece to pace the Tribe, which rallied in the second half to win to avenge an overtime loss last year in Wilmington. Junior forward Ben Wight added 10 points.

Williams entered the game with a total of 18 points on the season and came up big for W&M, especially at the charity stripe, where he converted his first 11 attempts before missing one with just eight minutes left to play.

Sophomore guard Trazarien White of UNCW led all scorers with 21 points for his second 20-point effort in the last four contests. Senior guard Maleeck Harden-Hayes chipped in 14 points, sophomore guard Jamari Thomas collected 12 and junior guard Nick Farrar pitched in 10.

"Give William & Mary all the credit," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's third-year head coach. "They deserved it. They deserved to win the game and we did not. In the second half, we got into a hole and had to climb out of it. They made all the right plays and we didn't.

"I thought we were ready. I didn't know how we would respond. I knew this game was going to be tough. They're a good basketball team. They were ready and we weren't."

In the second leg of a three-game homestand for the Seahawks, Siddle's club inched out to a three-point lead at halftime, but W&M came out firing after intermission and capitalized on UNCW's cold shooting in the decisive period to win on the road for the first time in eight tries this season.

No more than four points separated the two teams in the second half and the Seahawks took their second lead of the period, 62-60, on a free throw by Thomas with 4:36 remaining.

It was still a two-point game after Nelson sank a pair of free throws with 12.9 seconds on the clock for a 68-64 edge, but White answered with two free throws of his own with six seconds left, cutting the deficit to 69-67. Reserve guard Jake Milkereit then made the second of two free throws with 4.6 on the clock to get the score back to 69-66 before White's free throw with two seconds to go completed the scoring.

The game was a physical one, with a combined 59 personal fouls called. The Tribe had three players disqualified and four others with four fouls. The Seahawks had one player foul out and two others with four personals.

UNCW struggled offensively after the break, going 7:33 without a field goal during one stretch, and winding up 5-for-23 in the final 20 minutes. The Seahawks finished at 37.8 percent on the day, while W&M shot 42.9 percent.

The Seahawks grabbed a 39-36 advantage at halftime behind White and Harden-Hayes. White led all scorers with 13 points on 2-for-3 from the floor and 7-for-8 at the charity stripe. Harden-Hayes buried two of the team's three treys in the first period.

The two teams traded baskets through the first 10 minutes before the Tribe built an eight-point cushion. Williams was the catalyst in the back half of the first period for the Tribe, who jumped in front, 32-24, on a reverse layup by sophomore guard Matteus Case.

The Tribe still led by eight points, 34-28, when the Seahawks rattled off 13 straight points to take a 39-36 advantage at halftime. Harden-Hayes scored seven points in the spurt as UNCW went into the locker room leading for the 12th time in 19 games.
