Lanz Opens Season With 19 Kills In Narrow Loss

Senior Katie Lanz collected 19 kills in a 4-set loss to Virginia Tech

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW senior Katie Lanz opened her final season with the Seahawks with 19 kills in a narrow 3-1 (23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 29-31) loss to visiting Virginia Tech on Friday at the Seahawk Volleyball Classic at Hanover Hall.

In the season opener for both programs, the teams combined for 32 tied scores and 12 lead changes in the four-set match. Three points was the largest margin of victory in a set on the evening.

Lanz, who fashioned a double-double with 13 digs, led the UNCW offense on the night. Kirsten Badowski and Hannah Forbes, a freshman, both added seven kills apiece.

For the Hokies, Cera Powell and Mekenzi Heckman collected 20 and 16 kills apiece, respectively.

Anabel Zier of Virginia Tech held match-high honors with eight block assists as the Hokies compiled a 10-6 margin in total blocks.

In the fourth and final set, the Hokies jumped out to a 20-17 lead following a UNCW hitting error, but the Seahawks were able to rally and drew even at 23-all by forcing a hitting error. Both teams had opportunities to win the set over the final 14 points before a kill from Hannah Borer and a Seahawk hitting error closed out the set and match with a 31-29 Hokie win.

The Seahawks will play twice on Saturday beginning with a 9 a.m. start against Davidson. UNCW and Coastal Carolina close out the day's action with a 6 p.m. first serve.
