Vanda's Career-High Powers UNCW Past Huskies

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sam Vanda's career-high 16 kills led three Seahawks in double digits as UNCW knocked off Northeastern, 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-22, 25-22), to snap a seven-game losing streak in the series on Friday at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks posted their second straight win in conference play, improving to 2-1 and 7-8 overall. The Huskies, meanwhile, saw a two-match winning streak halted while dipping to 4-9 and 2-3 in the league.

Vanda's 16 kills eclipsed her previous career-high of 13, set earlier this season against Alabama State (Sep. 3). Joining her in double-digit kills were Nadia Wasilewski, who recorded four aces, with 14, and Elaina Murphy with 11.

Setter Gaby Zovko matched her season-high with 43 assists while adding six kills and four blocks for the Seahawks. Lily Goyer added career-highs of four kills and four blocks.

In the fourth set, a 6-0 run by the Seahawks snapped an 18-all tie and brought UNCW to match point. NU, however, scored the next four points before Vanda ended the match with her 16th kill of the evening.

Led by Wasilewski's seven kills, the Seahawks hit .350 in the opening set for the win.

Northeastern answered with a 25-16 win in the second set, but UNCW grabbed a 2-1 lead by limiting the Huskies to a .154 hitting average in set three.

Reigning CAA Rookie of the Week Ceyanne Ceman held match-high honors with 18 kills while Iris Canko posted a match-best 15 digs.

The Seahawks and Huskies meet Saturday at 1 p.m. in the series finale.
