Women's Soccer Preview: No. 10 North Carolina

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Fresh off a season-opening victory, the UNCW women's soccer team continues its three-game road swing on Sunday at No. 10 North Carolina with a 1 p.m. start at Dorrance Field.

The match can be streamed on the ACC Network Extra with Kyle Straub and Brianna Pinto on the call. Live stats will be available on UNCWStats.com

The Seahawks (1-0) started the year on a positive note with a 2-0 win at Queens on Thursday. The Tar Heels (1-0) made an early statement with a 3-0 triumph against No. 11 Tennessee in their season opener.

UNCW defenders Chloe Mills and Talia Parrous each notched goals in the second half to push the Seahawks past the Royals, who made their NCAA Division I debut. The Seahawks utilized both goalkeepers – Blair Barefoot and Hanna Wise – for a half in the shutout.

UNC outshot the Volunteers, 24-12, on Thursday. The Tar Heels' first marker of the season came off the foot of senior Aleigh Gambone with seven minutes to go in the first half. UNC added two second-half goals by Avery Patterson and Tori Hanson to secure the victory.

FIVE FACTS TO KNOW

SERIES HISTORY | Sunday will be the second time the two teams have met in the regular season. The first meeting occurred on a neutral site in Durham, N.C. on Sept. 9, 2017, with the then-No. 9 Tar Heels earning a 2-0 shutout in the Duke Nike Classic. UNCW and UNC played a preseason exhibition last year in the Port City.

NICE TO SEE YOU | The Seahawks will recognize a familiar face on the opposing sideline in UNC's Emily Moxley. The senior forward began her college career with UNCW in 2019. Moxley started 16-of-17 games and was named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie team after scoring five goals with a team-high eight assists in her freshman campaign with the Seahawks.

SIGNATURE WIN | UNCW will play a ranked opponent for the 24th time since 2006 after playing two in 2021. The Seahawks will look for their first victory against a ranked team in seven years.

NEAL vs. N.C. | The Seahawks are 9-6-1 in games against opponents from the state of North Carolina under Head Coach Chris Neal. UNCW has won five straight matches against in-state challengers dating back to 2021.

LOOKING AHEAD | UNCW will next travel to Richmond, Va., for a road matchup at VCU on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Seahawks and Rams were CAA rivals from 1995 to 2011.
