Taylor Pitches Seahawks To Series Sweep Of VMI

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Taber Mongero's third consecutive three-hit game back seven innings of one-run baseball from freshman Zane Taylor as UNCW finished off a non-conference sweep of visiting VMI on Sunday with a 6-1 win at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks raised their record to 16-11 with the win while the Keydets slid to 8-20.

Mongero, who hit .643 (9-14) for the weekend finished with three hits, scored twice and drove in another. Joining him with a multi-hit game was Brooks Baldwin, who doubled in two runs in the seventh and added a RBI single in the fifth. Baldwin had four doubles and a home run in the series and drove in nine runs.

Taylor (2-0) earned the win with a career-long seven innings of work. After allowing a run on four hits in the second inning, he retired 17 of the next 18 batters he faced and finished with seven strikeouts.

Six different Keydets had a hit but could only muster two after the second inning. Cole Jenkins plated the only run of the game with a single in the second inning.

Tyler Bradt (3-3) took the loss. He held the Seahawks off the score board for the first four innings before UNCW scored three in the fifth.

How it happened: Freshman John Newton's lead off homer in the bottom of the fifth tied the game and ignited the UNCW offense. Kevin Pitarra doubled with one out and UNCW followed with three consecutive hits to build a 3-1 lead. Mongero broke the deadlock with a single that score Dillon Lifrieri from second and Baldwin followed one batter later with a run-scoring single for a 3-1 lead.
