Diamond Hawks Take Series Opener, 3-1

WILMINGTON, N.C. – RJ Sales struck out nine hitters and Ethan Baucom delivered a clutch two-out double in a three-run fourth inning as UNCW edged visiting Hofstra, 3-1, in a Colonial Athletic Association series opener Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks ran their record to 17-11 with their fourth straight win and evened their conference record at 2-2. The Pride, meanwhile, saw their overall record move to 12-12 and 4-3 in the CAA.

Sales (4-1) struck out a career-high nine over his six innings, while allowing a run on six hits and a walk. He stranded five Pride runners in scoring position and ended four innings with a strikeout.

Hunter Hodges, the last of three Seahawk relievers, allowed a leadoff double before striking out the next three hitters to end the game for his third save.

Hofstra starter Mark Faello (3-2) went the distance, needing just 89 pitches in recording his second complete game of the season. He limited the Seahawks to three hits, walked one and struck out nine.

HU's Brian Morrell and Ryan Morash held game-high honors with two hits apiece.

How it happened: In the Seahawk fourth, Dillon Lifrieri doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Taber Mongero. Brooks Baldwin drew a walk to put runners on the corners. An attempted pickoff of Baldwin hit him in the side and caromed away allowing Lifrieri to score from third to tie game at 1-all. Matt Suggs was hit by a 2-0 offering one batter later. Following an out, Baucom drilled a 1-1 pitch to the wall in left allowing both base runners to score.

Inside the box score: Both teams combined for 25 strikeouts … Seahawk pitching held HU to 1-for-15 hitting with RISP … There were just a pair of two-out hits on the night, each team having one … UNCW reliever Cole Benton inherited two runners on base and none out in the eighth and kept Hofstra off the board … Dillon Lifrieri doubled in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to eight.
