Seahawks Seek Eighth CAA Men's Tennis Title

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW begins its quest for an eighth crown when the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championships convene early Friday (April 22) at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The No. 2 seeded Seahawks, 12-8, carry a three-match winning streak into the event and take on No. 7 Hofstra on Friday at 2 p.m. It's one of three quarterfinal matches scheduled for the opening day.

"We're very excited about the upcoming CAA Tournament," said 15-year head coach Mait Dubois. "We feel very good about our preparation and have made good strides the last few weeks.

"The conference is especially deep this year, with a number of teams that have had exceptional seasons. We feel great about where we stand and look forward to playing a very good Hofstra team on Friday."

DuBois and his club are the defending champions and have dominated the event over the last 12 years, winning seven titles in that span. The Seahawks have reached 10 of the last 12 championship matches.

Seven teams will vie for the CAA's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Four-time champion William & Mary picked up the top seed and lone bye followed by UNCW (#2), Delaware (#3), Elon (#4), Charleston (#5), Drexel (#6) and Hofstra (#7).

The seven-team championship kicks off early Friday with three quarterfinal matches. At 11 a.m., #4 Elon (13-8) meets #5 Charleston (9-8). At 2 p.m., #2 UNCW takes on #7 Hofstra (5-9) and #3 Delaware (14-8) battles #6 Drexel (9-8).

Friday's winners advance to the semifinals on Saturday, where #1 William & Mary (10-7) faces the Elon/Charleston winner at 11 a.m., followed by the UNCW/Hofstra winner against the Delaware/Drexel winner at 2 p.m. The CAA championship match is set for Sunday, April 24, at 1 p.m.

The Seahawks blanked the Pride, 4-0, in last year's quarterfinals and then shut out #5 James Madison, 4-0, in the semifinals before edging #3 William & Mary, 4-3, in the title match at the Millie West Tennis Facility in Williamsburg, Va.

The Seahawks only played one CAA opponent this spring, dominating Charleston, 6-1, on April 9, 2022, at the CofC Tennis Center. UNCW is 5-0 lifetime against Hofstra in men's tennis.

The Seahawks feature one of their youngest teams in recent years, with four freshmen, four sophomores, one junior and two seniors on the roster.
