Baseball Preview: at Campbell

Longtime rivals renew series that dates back to 1965

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – UNCW concludes its brief four-game road swing on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. start against longtime rival Campbell at Jim Perry Stadium.

The two programs have meet 125 times, but the series took a break in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid and conference scheduling rules.

The Seahawks (7-4) dropped their series last weekend at Appalachian State but did avert the sweep with a 12-3 win in the series finale on Sunday. Trailing 3-0 in the seventh inning, Jac Croom's lead off home run ignited the UNCW offense. The Seahawks scored 12 runs over the final three innings, including eight in the eighth inning to make it 9-3.

The Camels (5-7), meanwhile, went 2-1 over the weekend at the All-America Classic in Fayetteville, Campbell knocked off Ohio State and Army before bowing to Pitt on Sunday. Earlier in the week, Campbell dealt nationally-ranked NC State its first loss of the season.

Tuesday's game is the first of the home-and-home series between the two programs. The second game is set for April 26 at Brooks Field.

Following Tuesday's game, UNCW returns to Brooks Field for a three-game set with visiting Kennesaw State, which has gotten out to an 8-3 start. First game of the series is Friday and first-pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
