Seahawks Clinch Series Behind Williford

ELON, N.C. – UNCW freshman Trey Williford struck out eight and allowed one run over a career-long six innings, as the Seahawks topped Elon, 5-1, on Saturday to clinch the Coastal Athletic Association series at Latham Park.

The Seahawks picked up their third straight win to improve to 12-8 in the league and 24-18 overall. The Phoenix, however, dipped to 8-15 in the conference and 17-25 on the season.

Williford (5-1) earned the win by scattering five hits and walking three. TJ Zierman and Brady Thompson combined for three shutout innings of relief to nail down the win.

Elon's Tommy Mitchell (0-5) was the hard-luck loser despite allowing just one earned run over a career-long seven innings. The lefthander recorded 16 groundball outs and struck out one.

Jackson Alford collected four hits at the top of the Elon order, but the rest of the lineup was held to just four hits combined.

Elon stranded 13 baserunners.

Kevin Jones knocked in two runs with a two-out single in the first, and Trevor Lucas added an RBI infield single in a three-run eighth inning as UNCW built a 5-1 lead.

The series wraps up on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
